Small Guest List, Big Feels – Real Stories of Micro Weddings That Moved Us

Because when the people are few, the emotions run deep—and Southern Africa is the perfect backdrop.

1. Hannah & Josh – A Winelands Weekend Wedding with Only 14 Guests

Location: Franschhoek, South Africa
Guests: 14
Theme: Minimalist Luxe

British couple Hannah and Josh always imagined a destination wedding, but didn’t want a cookie-cutter resort affair. Instead, they flew into Cape Town with 12 of their closest friends and booked a boutique guesthouse in Franschhoek wine valley. The ceremony took place between two rows of vines with the Hottentots-Holland mountains as a backdrop.

They did a private wine tasting after vows, followed by a candlelit harvest table dinner under the stars. “Having fewer guests meant we could invest in meaningful details—like handwritten notes for each person, and live violin during dinner,” said Hannah. “It was intimate, delicious, and completely unforgettable.”

2. Lukas & Emma – Wild Love at a Namibia Desert Camp

Location: NamibRand Reserve, Namibia
Guests: 10
Theme: Desert Rose Vibes

For adventure-loving couple Lukas (from Germany) and Emma (from Australia), eloping in Namibia was the most “them” thing they could do. “We wanted to start our marriage with awe—and nothing says awe like the dunes at sunrise,” said Emma.

Their wedding was held in the middle of the Namib Desert, with ten friends flown in to share the experience. They said their vows on a dune, barefoot and wind-kissed, with only the sounds of the breeze and wildlife. Their reception was a sunset dinner under an acacia tree, with Moroccan lanterns, grilled game meats, and stargazing.

3. Claire & James – A Safari Wedding in Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools

Location: Mana Pools, Zimbabwe
Guests: 18
Theme: Luxury Game Lodge

Claire and James, an outdoorsy couple from Cape Town now living in Canada, chose Zimbabwe for their wedding because “we wanted it to feel like an adventure, not an event.” They booked a luxury mobile safari camp and flew in 18 guests from three continents.

The ceremony was held on the edge of the Zambezi River, with elephants grazing in the distance and a string quartet softly playing. “It felt primal, raw, and deeply connected,” said James. Guests stayed in canvas tents with outdoor showers, enjoyed bush walks, and spent evenings around a firepit sharing stories. No ballroom could compete.

4. Zoe & Dan – A Coastal Elopement in Mozambique

Location: Vilankulo, Mozambique
Guests: 6
Theme: Beachfront Bliss

After visiting Mozambique on a backpacking trip, Zoe and Dan vowed to come back one day for their wedding. And they did—with only six guests, a local acoustic duo, and the ocean as their altar.

The wedding was held on a quiet stretch of beach at golden hour, followed by cocktails in coconut shells, prawn curry cooked by a private chef, and dancing barefoot on a driftwood deck. “Everyone said it felt like a dream sequence,” laughed Zoe. “There was no pressure, no performance—just love, laughter, and low tide.”

5. Sophie & Tom – Garden Courtyard Wedding in Stellenbosch

Location: Stellenbosch, South Africa
Guests: 20
Theme: Afro-Chic Meets European Elegance

With family scattered across South Africa and Europe, Sophie and Tom chose a hidden garden courtyard in Stellenbosch to bring everyone together. They blended her French roots with his Afrikaans heritage, serving rooibos crème brûlée and local MCC (sparkling wine) after the ceremony.

They walked each guest down the aisle with them (yes, really!) and opted for a grazing table, live jazz trio, and a hand-painted guestbook inspired by African textiles. “We laughed the whole day. It felt like a reunion, not just a wedding,” Sophie said.
